The Past Couple of Weeks...

So, the past couple of weeks have been super busy for me! First of all, after my fun weekend in NOLA, I went up to Illinois to visit my friend Rachel and her husband Matt for labor day! It was fantastic - the weather was great, the people were awesome, and the food - just outta this world! While I was up there I got to go to Chicago and see all the touristy attractions that it has to offer! It was a lot of walking, but in the end it was definitely worth it.

A few weekends later, my best friend in the world has the cutest baby boy I've ever seen in my life! I think that he is the most precious thing ever - and am so excited to be able to spoil him.

And finally, I found out I was rejected from medical school (at LSU - where I work)! No need to feel bad or say you're sorry. I knew from the beginning it was a long shot! I'm not the smartest person, the greatest test taker, or anything of the sort; however, it's still hard when you see that little word on paper. Everyone tells me I should go and talk to the head of admissions, Dr. Kennedy, but I'm not sure if I want to. If my grades or test scores are to blame for not getting in, then I already know that. And if they aren't, I don't know that I could handle hearing that. So as I go forward, working - teaching - living, I think to myself. Do you want it bad enough? Am I willing to go the distance, take those few extra steps? Or should I just be content in the life I lead now - I am content in the existence I have now! Maybe eventually I'll make my way down to Kennedy's office, ask him why they said no - maybe not...

Whose ready to ...ooohh a big boat!!!

So, my very first trip to New Orleans was this weekend. Ashli (and Aaron) was having her bachelorette party down on Bourbon St. It was a super fun time. Breakdown of what went on goes something like this: met new folks, ate some good cajun food, crossed a giant bridge (and didn't die), got lost trying to park, saw a big boat (I think it was a carnival cruise ship), walked on the River walk, was creeped out by a bunch of people wearing costumes for a convention thingy, drove to Kenner (accidentally), tried to go eat at a fancy restaurant only to be deterred by some Mardi Gras folks and a guy with a giant tuba!, drank a little bit, missed the street car to downtown, roamed Bourbon St., danced a little bit, had a drunk guy attack me with a frozen shark drink (imagine him making this plastic shark nom on my neck), gave said guy an anatomy lesson on the neck, looked for a pirate, had a shot dumped down my shirt and the shot girl paw at my boobs apologizing for it, and finally watched as someone almost puked on my feet.

All in all, it was a great time! Congrats Aaron and Ashli - can't wait until the wedding!

One of THOSE people...

Please Note: I am in no way an actual runner or any sort of athletic individual, less the little bits of walking/running I do five days a week. So please take this review with that in mind.

I guess I should start at the beginning. The first time I ever saw someone wearing these silly shoes I about fell on the floor. They look ridiculous - and so did the person wearing them! I never in my life imagined I'd own a pair one day. But of course, I am a shoe person. So yesterday, I stopped at SportSpectrum (on the corner of Fern and 70th) to look at new tennis shoes. No I didn't need new shoes - the Nike's that I wear every day are perfectly fine, but again - I love shoes! So, while roaming around this store I come across the toe shoes (that's what I call them, like toe socks, but they actually have a name... five finger something or other; however, I think that sounds stupid because you don't have fingers on your feet. Maybe if they had called them five phalanges I wouldn't have minded so much - ha ha, anatomy joke!). Anyway, so I decided that I would test those babies out. I mean, I've seen more than one person rocking these things around town, so they have to have some good qualities right?!? So, first thing I notice - they don't have American sizes listed on them (that's one point against them immediately). So homeboy who works at the store walks by and I ask him about the size, to which he makes me go and measure my little foot on the foot measure-er. Once I know what size shoe to try on, I find one on display and try to wiggle my fat little toes into the spaces provided for them... difficulty level here is like a 6.5 on a 10pt scale cause I'm standing up on one foot trying to monkey toe my feet so that those sausage digits will go where they are supposed to, and I almost fall down - twice! But I'm all for making a fool of myself (which was totally the case since there were like four people watching me try these things on!). Making a long story even longer here, I finally get the display on, then decide that I should have just gotten a pair to put on. So the sales person goes back in the back and gets me a couple different styles to try on. Side note: I didn't realize there were so many different ways to make toe shoes, but there are! I put on the first pair - a little less difficult this time - and walk around the store for a minute. Initially, I didn't bring money into the store because I know my weakness when it comes to shopping (I should have never gone into that store to begin with), so after a few minutes of piddling, I'm sold! Little man didn't have to do anything! So now, I'm one of THOSE people, the owner of some freaking weird-ass looking toe shoes. YAY, GO ME!

This morning, I got up as usual, and went for my walk/run. But instead of putting on my Nike's, I try out my new fangled contraptions. I don't know what I assumed it was going to be like - maybe I thought putting them on would automatically make me one of those people who likes to run a lot, but it didn't. I do like the way it feels when you walk in them though. Like being barefoot, but not! I LOVE being barefoot. The one thing I noticed about it though, was that since I did feel like I was barefoot, I spent a lot of time watching the ground and not so much time looking where I was going. I'm sure that will dissipate once I'm used to wearing them. Another thing that worried me was how much they might move on my feet, like heels when you walk in them, your foot sides and can cause blisters. Luckily for me, no such thing occurred. The shoes do have straps on the back that you can use to tighten the sides and back - I assume to keep your foot from sliding in and out of the heel all the time. These are the type of shoe you would think would be made specifically for someone, not generically. However, they do fit well in the general size. Ohh, and... they made my big toe hurt. My feet felt great and all my other toes were fine (I generally get blisters because, like most people, my toes all crunch together and lean toward my big toe, but today that was not the case). However, I didn't actually run today. I'll try that next time - hopefully that will goes just as well (or in my big toe's case, better!) than this trip!

All and all, these shoes are pretty awesome, I like that they make me look like I got flippers on the bottom of my legs. Just wish they weren't so darned expensive... I have buyers remorse like a motherfucker! Check out the pic below!

What is Reality?

As per our agreement, here I am again! Writing about the nothings that take up my life and fill it with joy and sadness. So since I was here, not a whole lot of new has par-took in my day to days, but I did see Inception this afternoon. And I must say, I was completely blown away by the syntax of the story. The characters were well written and while I generally do not appreciate Leonardo DiCaprio's work, this was probably the best thing I've seen from him. However, I was feeling a little Matrix-y while in the theater (you know the whole reality isn't reality issue has been done, just not directly in this manner). Also, I've signed up to have some headshots taken, you know in case I ever decide to become a movie star. Since I'm in Louisiana, and they do film quite a few movies down here (if for nothing other than the tax break the state gives them -- and they wonder why the state has no $$$), I figured that I should try to be in a movie. That would knock at least one thing off my bucket list. It could also lead to more movie roles and then eventually turn into a full fledged superstar status, but that's only a dream (or is it?!?!)

Another fun thing to look forward to this week is the taking of the MCAT or med school admissions test - it's definitely freaking me out! I have this inundated fear sweeping over me and can't help but allow thoughts of negativity creep into my mind. I have many people telling me that I can do well, that I can score high enough to get into medical school, but I'm still not sure. I have a feeling somewhere deep down that I'm going to walk into the testing center and forget just about everything that I know about biology, chemistry, english, etc. and have to fend for myself without the hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of education I've paid for. Maybe for now I should hold on to the movie star idea and not hold my breath on the med school thing (or vice versa!) That's all for now... Love ya mean it, BYE!

The Tides that Bind

Wow, it's been a super long time since I've been here. And not because i've been too busy or anything, but because I forgot about Blogging! I'm a stranger to the "vent to the world" mentatlity! Trying to be better though! So... here goes! Since I last updated, I've done many a thing. Specifically, graduating from USF (University of South FL) with a Master's Degree in Medical Sciences with a concentration in Anatomy and up and moved to Shreveport, LA to be an instructor in the cellular biology and anatomy department. Basically what I do is work with the first year medical students on cadaver dissections; however, it seems that I am also a janitor since I'm told to refill papertowel dispensors, soap dispensors, sweep the floors, take out the trash, etc. I don't know how I got roped into that, but oh well! I like the job. I've been here about seven months and am starting to wonder if this was the right choice. I have decided to try applying to the medical school that I work for and see if I can get in (but unless God decides to come down and help me take the MCAT, I don't think i'll get in!). I really need something other than this. They are giving me some lectures in the fall, which should abide me for now, but I know that the itch will come back. I want to go, see, be somewhere else. Namely California, even now as I attempt to get into medical school am I looking at programs for residency out there. I want to be there, I should be there. I am not someone who is supposed to live and stay in the same place for years and years. The time has come for me to actually go and do some "work", but I promise to come back soon and write again! <3>

Ohhhh K...so it's been a while!

Again, it's 2:30 in the AM. Why is it always so early in the morning when I feel it necessary to rant and rave about absolutely nothing? So where to begin...It's been almost a year since I actually posted anything on this blog. Probably because I forgot it was really here until Rachel asked me about it a few months ago. So catching up... Dropped Cali, spent some time in Texas, Interviewed in Las Vegas, Applied for grad school, Moved to Florida, Got into grad school, Turned down a job at the Las Vegas Police Department and Started grad school. In a nut shell! So, since it's late and i'm tired, gonna postpone the in depth montra... HOLLA!

Mini Trip to Cali

Okay so this is totally long, but read it anyway!:
(P.S--sorry it took so long!)

MY WEEKEND IN CALIFORNIA!!!

FYI 2:00 am is the perfect time to drive down the interstate in California because no one is on the road. So why am I on the road at 2:00 am? Well it begins long before tonight. A few weeks ago, I got a call asking if I wanted to come interview with san Bernardino sheriff’s department. I agreed and so today I had my interview. However, when I found out that I would be coming back to Cali, I made plans to have dinner at the most amazing sushi place in san clemente, maybe in all of OC, but whatever that’s not the point. And today after my interview (which I think I rocked) I went for sushi. I thought it was just going to be me and kristy and joe, but it wasn’t. Brittney, Brenda, and Rhonda were there too. Brittney who just turned 21 last month wanted to go out like all 21 year olds do, so I did because I don’t have anything else to do. First we go to Beach Fire, a hip, laid-back kinda place on del mar. Live music and what not. Paintings hanging on the wall are for sale. It’s a happening place for san clemente. Definitely need to hit it up on Tuesday cause its 80’s night and everyone loves the eightys. And if you don’t, no one cares and you should just stay at home!!! After a couple of drinks, we move on to OLE’S which is definitely a dive bar with pool tables and non-trendy people. There we have too much to drink and I introduce all the people there to new drinks and great toasts. How cool am i? Totally! After a while some guy tries to put his hand up Britt’s skirts so we decide to leave and go to Goody’s which is a place where you can dance, which we did. Britt is un-sober which is okay until we decide to leave and she wants to join the guy we’ve been hanging out with. We argue for about 15 minutes and she finally gets out of my car and walks down the street with this guy she’s only met once and known for like 20 minutes. I’m not her mother and I know I should be like whatever, but still I worry. This guy better not be a freak. I leave her anyway and hope she’s okay! So this is why I’m on the interstate at 2:00 am. I’m driving back from San Clemente to the hotel before I have to get up tomorrow and head to Venice Beach! A Gnarly vacation/job interview session so far!

Friday was great! We spent the first half driving up to Venice Beach which has the nicest sand that I’ve seen so far in California. There was a great breeze and some hot boys. Hopefully got some good pictures, but I don’t know. Three hours go by and we decide to wander down to the boardwalk, but we never get there. We are too fascinated with the houses that are right on the beach. And when I say right on the beach, I mean right on the beach, like walk out your door and two feet later there’s the fucking sand, right on the beach. Most of them have really beautiful glass windows. I want one of those houses! Then we decide that we need to head over to Hollywood Blvd. Visit Graumans theater and the walk of fame. So we get in the car and drive down Santa Monica Blvd which takes forever cause there are so many people in LA that it’s not funny! It takes us almost two hours to go like maybe 20 miles. But it was totally cool. We saw Beverly Hills (the sign that is in all the movies was right there on the side of the road) and totally looked like tourists cause we were taking pictures. We get lost kinda, but finally make it to Hollywood Blvd. So we park and walk around looking at all of the stars on the walk of fame and check out the Kodak theater and Graumans where all the hand and feet prints are in the concrete. It was really cool. Ran into this homeless guy (at least I think he was homeless. He was sitting on the sidewalk asking for money) who had the funniest line I've ever heard and had I had some cash I would have totally given him some, but I crack up laughing as we move on. We ate a Musso and Franks, the oldest restaurant in Hollywood. However, we were totally out of place and not dressed to eat in there, but they let us eat anyway. Then we walk some more, run into the homeless guy again who happens to remember me as the girl who cracked up at his joke, go take pictures of the Roosevelt Hotel, think about catching a movie in the Chinese theater, change our minds and walk down the Hollywood and Vine. Take that picture and head home. All in all it was an amazing trip and can’t wait to do it again, but next time we’re hitting up the Playboy Mansion and the Hollywood Sign.
